Kathryn Niermann, Class of 2023

I have always been interested in many different academic subjects throughout my life. I arrived at the university a bit disheartened because I wanted the opportunity to pursue and examine all of the paths that I was genuinely passionate about without having to try and choose which one was more important to me. At first, it just didn't seem like that was going to happen – that is until I found GGIS.

I love how versatile the major and subject matter is. I am able to connect my interests in the environment, earth sciences, history, political science, sociology, coding, and design all into one. GIS can be useful to any industry and can be applied in many more ways than you can possibly imagine. Everything in the world is influenced in some way by geographic location and we ourselves use geographic information every day even unknowingly. It can help you get from point A to point B, help track the spread of communicable diseases and recognize patterns to help combat them, monitor ecological trends over time to help with the climate crisis and conservation, and it in general just helps us understand more about the world and why it is the way that it is.
