GEOG is changing to GGIS, effective this fall.
The subject code for courses offered by our department is changing from GEOG to GGIS. Please be aware of this change when viewing the Summer and Fall 2022 course schedules.
Summer 2022: GEOG → Fall 2022 onwards: GGIS
Continuing students will see both GEOG and GGIS courses on their transcripts but the Degree Audit System (DARS) will count both course codes in the same category. I encourage any students or advisors who experience issues or have questions about this transition to please contact our office at geography@illinois.edu.
My sincere thanks to GGIS Office Administrator Matt Cohn and Office Support Specialist Miranda Combs, and to Banner schedulers across campus whose departments crosslist courses with us for their efforts over the past two years to complete this intricate project.
Thanks also to the College of LAS, the Catalog Management & Section Scheduling team in the Office of the Registrar, and the Office of the Provost; namely LAS Interim Associate Dean for Curricula and Academic Policy Dr. Stephen Downie, Senior Assistant Registrar Deb Forgacs, and Associate Provost for Educational Programs and Success Initiatives Kathy Martensen for their expertise and ongoing support.
Back in 2012, our department name changed from 'Geography' to 'Geography & Geographic Information Science' to reflect the development of geographic information science (GIS) as a vibrant interdisciplinary field. This course subject code change reinforces our strong commitment to advancing geography and GIS in our education, research, and engagement endeavors.
