Dr. Julie Cidell was named a Center for Advanced Study (CAS) 2020-21 Associate. During this appointment, she will work on a new book project: an historical geography that examines the Des Plaines-Kankakee confluence in northeastern Illinois as a local space of distribution with global significance. By expanding the geographic focus from the river confluence to the nearby region, and drawing on the geomorphological concept of the riverscape, the book will demonstrate how spaces of distribution are constituted by their surroundings as much as by the actual sites of terminals and loading facilities, providing a starting point to theorize about space, place, and mobility.
