Professor Emeritus Tom Bassett presented an invited paper on cartography and colonialism in 19th century West Africa at the Frontier Forum on Cartographic History, organized by Chinese colleagues at Yunnan University. During a side trip, Tom and his wife Carol Spindel visited the spectacular irrigated rice terraces at Bada in Yuànyàng County.
